Remove Blank Pages
Detect and delete blank pages from a PDF, including noisy scans.
How do you remove blank pages from a PDF?
To remove blank pages from a PDF, drop the file into Docuboxer: it checks every page, pre-selects the ones that look empty, and nothing is deleted until you confirm. It reads the page text first; if there is none, it renders the page at low resolution and measures how much ink it holds, ignoring the dark edges scanners leave and isolated specks of dust, so it also catches the nearly blank sheets of a noisy scan. A sensitivity slider tunes how strict the detection is, an option decides whether a page that carries only a page number counts as blank, and you can tick or untick any thumbnail by hand. Everything runs in your browser: the file is never uploaded, the tool is free, and there is no signup. You download a new PDF and see exactly how many pages were removed.
How to use Remove Blank Pages
- Drag your PDF into the drop zone or pick it from your file browser. Docuboxer analyzes the pages inside your browser and shows its progress; a document with hundreds of pages takes a few seconds.
- Review the thumbnails: pages the tool believes are blank come pre-ticked and outlined in red. If one slipped through, or a real page got flagged, move the sensitivity slider or tick and untick individual pages yourself.
- Decide what to do with pages that only contain a page number. The "Ignore page numbers" option is on by default and treats them as blank; turn it off if you always want to keep any page that has text.
- Click "Remove N pages", then "Download PDF". You will see how many pages were removed and how many the new file has; your original file is never modified.
Common use cases
Cleaning up a double-sided scan
When you run single-sided printouts through a duplex scanner, every empty back side becomes a page in the PDF. Pixel-based detection finds them even with the grey tint of the paper or a few specks of dust, and you drop them all in one go.
Removing the empty sheets Word leaves behind
A stray page break, a table ending exactly at the bottom margin, or a chapter forced onto an odd page leaves blank pages in the exported PDF. Many still show a footer page number, and the ignore-page-numbers option recognizes them anyway.
Printing a long report without wasting paper
Before you send a big report to the printer, strip the empty pages so you do not burn sheets and toner. If you also need to rearrange what is left, the natural next step is the Organize PDF tool (/organize).
Sending a contract or an application without filler pages
Scanned contracts and application packets often arrive with filler sheets or blank backs that confuse whoever reviews them. A few fewer pages make the file easier to read and smaller; if it is still large, run it through Compress PDF (/compress) afterwards.
Splitting a batch scan into separate documents
Some scanners separate each document in a batch with a blank sheet. Use it as a marker: spot it in the thumbnails, note its page number, and split the PDF into its parts with Split PDF (/split).
Frequently asked questions
How does the tool decide that a page is blank?
It reads the page text first: if there are letters or digits, the page counts as having content. With no text, it renders the page at low resolution and computes what fraction of the pixels is dark, skipping a thin border and isolated dots. If that fraction falls under the threshold set by the sensitivity slider, the page is proposed as blank.
Can it detect nearly blank pages in a scan with smudges or noise?
Yes. Light grey paper, stray specks of dust and the dark shadow along the scanner edge do not count as content. If a page with a few smudges is still not flagged, raise the sensitivity; if a page with real content gets flagged, lower it or untick it on its thumbnail.
What about pages that only show a page number?
With "Ignore page numbers" on, a page whose only text is a page number (like "7", "- 12 -", "Page 3 of 10" or "iv") sitting in the top or bottom margin, and that has nothing else visible, is proposed as blank. Short text that does not look like a page number, such as "THE END" or "2024", counts as content. That is typical of Word documents with a numbered footer. Turn the option off if you would rather keep them.
Will anything be deleted without my approval?
No. The detections are only suggestions: you see a thumbnail of every page and can tick or untick any of them before pressing the button. The original PDF is never changed; the tool builds a new file for you to download.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The analysis and the page removal both happen in your browser, so the contracts, medical records or ID scans you are cleaning up never leave your device. The tool is free and does not ask for an account or an email address.
Can I remove blank pages from a password-protected PDF?
The protection has to come off first. If the PDF has a password or editing restrictions, the tool tells you and points you to Unlock PDF (/unlock); then you come back here with the unprotected file.
