PDF tools that don't upload files: a field guide
Five questions that expose any online PDF tool, a summary of the network test you can run yourself, and a job-by-job map to the guides that explain each step.
Most PDF jobs, such as merging, splitting, compressing, rotating, numbering, stamping, signing, protecting and cleaning, can run inside your browser tab without sending the file to a server. More than twenty of Docuboxer's PDF tools work that way, and you can check it yourself in two minutes. Below you will find the questions to ask any online PDF tool, a quick way to test the answer yourself, and a map from each job to the guide that walks through it.
Five questions to ask any online PDF tool
Before you drop a payslip, a contract or a medical report into a web page, run through these:
- Does the file leave my device? The network test below gives you evidence you can check.
- What happens to it afterward? If it is uploaded, look for a stated retention period and who can access it. A vague answer is an answer.
- Do I need an account? An account links the files to you. A tool that needs none has less to connect.
- What are the real limits? Size, pages per day and watermarks on the output are the usual traps. Read them before you spend time on a file.
- What does the output carry? Author names, software versions and file paths can travel inside the PDF. The guide on what a PDF's metadata reveals shows what to look for.
How to test the upload question yourself
The full steps live in the upload-check section of Edit PDFs offline: compress, merge and read. In short: press F12, open the Network tab, run your PDF and sort by size. You will also see small analytics and ad requests (Google Analytics, Vercel), because the page loads them on every tool, and none of them carries your document. What must not appear is a POST or PUT whose size matches your PDF, to this domain or to any other. Chrome's Network panel reference explains the columns, and the same test works on any competitor's site.

A safe order for a document that will leave your hands
Say you are sending a signed contract to a landlord, a bank or a school. Run the steps in this order and you won't have to redo any of them:
- Fix the structure: merge, split or reorder the pages and rotate the crooked ones.
- Add visible marks: page numbers, a draft stamp if you need one.
- Lock, then sign: flatten any form first so the fields can't be edited, and sign last so the signature is the final change.
- Clean the hidden layer on the final file. Each step above rewrites the PDF, so cleaning at the start doesn't guarantee a clean result at the end.
- Compress: last, so you see the real size you'll attach.
- Protect with a password at the very end. A protected file can't be edited without opening it first, so any later tweak means unlocking it again.
Where to slow down
Running in the browser has its own limits:
- Huge files use your device's memory, so a PDF of hundreds of megabytes may stall on a modest phone. Split it first or switch to a computer.
- A drawn signature is not a certified one. It covers many everyday cases, while processes that require an advanced electronic signature need another mechanism. See is a drawn PDF signature legally binding.
- Passwords can't be guessed. Unlocking needs the password you already know.
- A scan is a picture. If you can't select the text, you need recognition: extract text from a scanned PDF.
- Unknown senders deserve suspicion. Before opening a surprise attachment, read can a PDF contain a virus.
Not uploading is different from working offline
The page has to load with a connection the first time. What it doesn't do is send your document anywhere. For patchy-connection situations, offline PDF tools covers what fits each case.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a PDF without uploading it?
Yes. The everyday jobs (merge, split, compress, rotate, number, stamp, sign, protect and clean) run in your browser on your own file. The Network tab shows analytics requests but no POST or PUT the size of the document.
How can I tell whether a PDF website keeps my file?
Open developer tools, go to Network, run your file and sort by size. Small analytics and ad requests will appear and don't carry the document. If no POST or PUT matches the size of your PDF, the file never left your device. If one does, find the retention policy before you continue.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Docuboxer's PDF tools are free and need no signup.
What should I do first before sending a document to someone else?
Fix the page order and marks, sign, clean hidden data, compress, and set the password last.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, on iPhone and Android in the browser. For very large files a computer is better because everything uses the device's memory.
Can I open a protected PDF if I forgot the password?
No. The tools unlock a PDF only when you know the password.
