How do you convert a Word (.docx) file to Markdown?

To convert Word to Markdown, drop the .docx on this page: Docuboxer reads it in your browser, turns headings into #, lists into bullets and tables into GFM tables, and keeps links, bold and italic. You can omit the images, embed them, or take them in a ZIP next to the .md, see the result rendered or as plain text, then copy or download it. It also shows how many tokens the Markdown has for GPT (exact) and Claude (estimated), which is useful because clean Markdown uses fewer tokens than the same text with loose formatting and reads better in ChatGPT or Claude. It is free, needs no signup, and the file is never uploaded to a server. It only accepts .docx: an old .doc has to be saved as .docx first. Equations, text boxes and comments are not included.

How to use Word to Markdown

  1. Drag your .docx file onto the upload area or click to choose it. It is converted in your browser, without uploading.
  2. Choose what to do with images: omit them (cheapest in tokens), embed them in the Markdown, or receive them in a ZIP with the .md.
  3. Check the result in the rendered preview or on the Markdown tab, and see how many tokens it has for GPT and Claude.
  4. Copy the Markdown or download it as .md (or as a ZIP if you chose to take the images with you).
  5. If you want to compare costs and context windows for each model, open the result in the token counter.

Common use cases

Giving a Word document to ChatGPT or Claude

Pasting formatted Word content sometimes brings odd breaks and symbols. Markdown keeps the structure (titles, lists, tables) in few tokens and the model understands it better.

Feeding a knowledge base or a RAG system

Convert manuals, policies or minutes from Word into clean Markdown so you can split them by heading before indexing.

Migrating documentation to a wiki or a repository

Turn a Word document into .md to upload to GitHub, Notion, Obsidian or a static site generator, with its tables and links.

Checking how many tokens a document weighs before using it

With the count of the result you know whether it fits in the context window and what it would cost, without leaving the tool.

Pulling the text out of a report without copying by hand

Avoid dragging styles and broken tables along when copying from Word, and get structured text ready to edit in any editor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Word document to Markdown for free?

Upload the .docx to Docuboxer, choose what to do with images and download the .md. It is converted in your browser, with no signup and no usage limit. Headings come out as #, lists as bullets and tables in GFM format.

Why Markdown instead of pasting the Word file straight into the AI?

Because it's structured plain text: it takes fewer tokens than loosely formatted content, keeps titles, lists and tables, and models understand it very well. That leaves more of your context and budget free.

Are tables preserved?

Yes. Word tables come out as Markdown GFM tables, with the first row as the header. Cells with several paragraphs are joined with line breaks. Merged cells are flattened because Markdown doesn't support them.

Can it convert an old .doc file?

No. The Word 97–2003 .doc format is binary and can't be read here. Open it in Word or LibreOffice, save it as .docx and upload it again.

What is lost in the conversion?

Visual formatting (colors, fonts, margins) doesn't exist in Markdown. Equations, text boxes, SmartArt, comments and tracked changes are not included either. Text, headings, lists, tables, links, bold and italic are.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with the mammoth and turndown libraries. A document with personal or confidential data never leaves your device.
