The Smallpdf alternative
Smallpdf is a polished Swiss product with over 20 tools and an excellent user experience. Its free plan, however, runs out fast: 2 tasks per day. The third time you need to compress a PDF, you either wait until tomorrow or pay. Docuboxer solves the same kinds of tasks with a different model: 100% in-browser processing, no uploads, and no daily counter.

When to choose Smallpdf
If you convert PDFs to Word frequently, need to collect e-signatures, use OCR, or prefer native desktop and mobile apps with integrations (Google Drive, Dropbox), Smallpdf is a mature option and its Pro plan removes the limits. Its security practices are serious: encryption in transit, ISO/IEC 27001, and stated file deletion after one hour.
When to choose Docuboxer
If what holds you back is the 2-tasks-a-day counter, or you don't want a contract, a payslip or a case file traveling to someone else's server —however good their deletion policy—, Docuboxer's local model removes the problem at the root: the file never leaves your machine, there are no daily limits, and no account is needed. It's the difference between trusting a promise and not having to trust anyone at all.

Frequently asked questions
What limit does Smallpdf have on its free version?
Smallpdf's free plan allows 2 tasks per day. For unlimited use you need the Pro plan, which costs from about $9-10 USD/month billed annually (more if you pay month to month, as of July 2026). Docuboxer has no daily limits: since processing runs in your own browser, there is no server cost to recover.
Does Smallpdf upload my files to its servers?
Yes. Smallpdf's web tools process files on their servers. The transfer is encrypted (TLS), the company holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification, and it states that files are deleted from its servers one hour after processing. Docuboxer avoids the upload entirely: the file is processed in your browser and never leaves your machine.
Is Docuboxer a good free alternative to Smallpdf?
For merging, splitting, compressing, rotating, unlocking or converting PDFs and images, yes: no 2-tasks-a-day limit, no signup, and no uploads. If you need PDF-to-Word conversion, e-signatures, OCR, or desktop and mobile apps, Smallpdf offers those features (several only on the Pro plan) and Docuboxer doesn't yet.
Why can Docuboxer offer unlimited free use when Smallpdf can't?
It's a difference of architecture, not generosity. Every task on Smallpdf consumes compute on their servers, so they cap the free plan to contain costs. On Docuboxer, processing happens on your own CPU via WebAssembly: our cost for your task is zero, so we don't need to limit it.
