What your photos reveal about you (and how to strip it)

Your photos carry GPS coordinates, your phone model and the exact time. What's in there, who can read it, and how to remove it before posting.

A phone photo quietly records the exact model of the device that took it, the date and time down to the second, and — more often than most people realize — GPS coordinates precise to within a few meters. All of that lives in the file's EXIF data, a technical header the camera writes automatically every time you press the shutter. What a phone photo actually stores

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) isn't internet folklore — it's a decades-old standard that virtually every phone and camera writes into the file without you ever turning it on. The fields that show up most consistently:

  • Device make and model: everything from "iPhone 15 Pro" to the exact sensor model on a professional camera, plus the software version that processed the shot.
  • Exact date and time: not just the day, but the hour, minute and second the shutter fired, often alongside the device's time zone at that moment.
  • GPS coordinates: latitude and longitude to several decimal places — enough to place the exact spot on a map within a few meters. Some devices also log altitude.
  • Camera serial number: common on DSLR and mirrorless bodies, rarer on phones. It exists for equipment traceability, but it uniquely fingerprints the device that took the shot.
  • Orientation: how the image should rotate to display correctly — the reason a photo shot in portrait doesn't open sideways.
  • Shooting settings: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, whether flash fired. Mostly harmless technical data, but it travels in the same package.

The real case everyone cites: John McAfee's hideout

In 2012, while McAfee was evading arrest in Central America, a Vice journalist visiting him posted a photo taken on an iPhone with the caption "we are with John McAfee right now." The photo still carried its original EXIF data, GPS included, and within hours internet sleuths had extracted the coordinates and pinpointed the resort in Guatemala where he was staying. Nobody hacked anything — the location was sitting in plain text inside the file the moment it was uploaded. It became the textbook example of what EXIF leaks, precisely because nothing about it was exotic: a normal photo, uploaded the normal way, with the metadata still attached.

The same mechanism plays out constantly at a much smaller scale: someone photographs an item to sell on a marketplace app from inside their own home, uploads the original file straight from their camera roll, and the listing carries the seller's home coordinates for anyone who downloads the image and checks its EXIF.

Which platforms strip EXIF on upload — and which don't

This is where most confusion comes from, because the behavior isn't consistent:

  • Usually strip it: major social platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, WhatsApp when sent as a photo) recompress every image for their own servers, and that process discards most metadata, GPS included, as a side effect.
  • Usually don't: email attachments, cloud storage links (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud shared albums) pointing at the original file, messaging apps when a photo is sent explicitly "as a document" instead of a compressed image, and pretty much any personal website or contact form that receives the file as-is.

A useful rule of thumb: if the file that lands on the other end is roughly the same size as the original, the metadata is very likely still intact. If the platform visibly recompressed and shrank it, it has probably been stripped along the way — but "probably" isn't the same as checking before you send something sensitive.

Why the screenshot trick works (and what it costs you)

It's the most common instinct for scrubbing a photo without thinking about it: open it, take a screenshot, and share that instead of the original file. It works, because a screenshot is a new file generated by the operating system and inherits none of the original image's metadata. The cost is quality: a screenshot is capped at your screen's resolution — almost always lower than the source photo — and gets recompressed on top of that, so the result looks noticeably softer, especially once someone zooms in or prints it. It solves the metadata problem at the expense of the file itself. The cleaner move is to strip the EXIF from the original and, if you also need a smaller file size to share, run it through an image compressor that actually controls output quality instead.

What stripping EXIF doesn't do (an honest limit)

Removing EXIF data doesn't anonymize a photo. The visible content is still the visible content: a recognizable face is still recognizable, a street sign or storefront in the background still gives away the location, and a watermark or overlaid text doesn't vanish because you cleaned the metadata. On top of that, there are entire techniques for identifying where and when a photo was taken that never touch EXIF at all — matching a background against known landmarks, reading shadows to infer time of day, comparing recurring objects across images. No metadata tool does anything about those. If something visible in the frame needs to disappear, the fix is cropping or blurring that part of the image with an image converter, not scrubbing metadata. When it actually matters to clean up EXIF

It's worth checking before: selling something secondhand with photos taken inside your home, posting through a channel that doesn't recompress (messaging apps as a document, your own site), sharing photos of documents or screens taken with a camera instead of a real screenshot, or handing photos to anyone outside your immediate circle. Frequently asked questions

Does stripping EXIF data make a photo anonymous?

No. EXIF is metadata about the file, not the picture itself — the visible content stays exactly as visible after you remove it. A readable street sign, a license plate, a recognizable face or a work uniform in the frame still identifies the place and the people with no metadata involved. Stripping EXIF closes one specific leak (exact GPS, timestamp, device model), not everything a photo can give away.

Do Instagram, Facebook and X strip EXIF data automatically?

Generally, yes — major social platforms recompress every photo you upload for their own servers, and that process discards most metadata, GPS included. The risk sits elsewhere: email attachments, a file sent through cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud sharing), a message sent as a document instead of a compressed photo, or a form on someone's own website. None of those are guaranteed to touch the metadata at all.

How precise is the GPS location saved in a phone photo?

Most phones record latitude and longitude to several decimal places, which pinpoints the shot to within a few meters — not a neighborhood, a specific spot. If the photo was taken inside a home, that's functionally the same as publishing the address.

Why do DSLR and mirrorless cameras store a serial number in EXIF?

Manufacturers include it for equipment traceability — useful if the camera is ever stolen and photos taken with it turn up publicly. For everyday use it's just one more identifying detail worth not scattering unnecessarily, especially if you resell the camera while still posting under the same handle.

Does taking a screenshot of a photo remove its metadata?
