Do watermarks actually protect your work?
What a watermark deters, what it does nothing to stop, and how to place one so it frustrates copying without ruining the image.

What a watermark genuinely accomplishes
A watermark isn't protection in the sense of encryption or an access permission — it's a visual signal. As a signal, though, it does real, if modest, work:
- Friction against casual reuse. Most unauthorized reuse of an image doesn't come from someone running professional removal tools — it comes from someone who saves a file and reuses it without thinking twice. A visible mark interrupts that impulse; it adds a step most people won't bother taking.

It isn't a technical access-control mechanism; it's text or a logo layered over pixels, and pixels can be edited.
It's worth separating watermarks from EXIF metadata, the other common way people try to "sign" an image. Metadata — including your name as author, if you fill that field in — disappears the moment someone screenshots the file, uploads it to a platform that strips metadata on processing (most do), or simply recompresses it. - The trade-off is real: more protection means more annoyance. A dense, high-opacity tiled watermark protects better, but it also wrecks the viewing experience for someone looking at it legitimately — a client reviewing a proposal, say. The right setting depends on whether the file is a preview (protect hard, some annoyance is fine) or the final deliverable (protect lightly, prioritize how it looks).
The legal backdrop, without pretending to be legal advice
One misconception is worth clearing up directly: a watermark isn't where copyright comes from. Authorship of a photograph, illustration, or document exists from the moment it's created — with or without a mark.
